Frequently Asked Questions
How many IPv4 addresses exist?
There are exactly 4,294,967,296 (2^32) possible IPv4 addresses. Of these, approximately 4,097,983,851 are allocated to organizations for use on the public internet. The remainder are reserved for private networks, multicast, documentation, and other special purposes.
Are IPv4 addresses running out?
Yes. All five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) have exhausted their free pools of IPv4 addresses. ARIN exhausted in 2015, RIPE in 2019, and the remaining registries between 2011-2020. New allocations come from recovered or transferred blocks. IPv6 is the long-term solution.
What is a Regional Internet Registry (RIR)?
RIRs are organizations that manage IP address allocation for specific geographic regions. The five RIRs are ARIN (North America), RIPE NCC (Europe/Middle East), APNIC (Asia-Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America), and AFRINIC (Africa). They receive IP blocks from IANA and distribute them to ISPs and organizations.
How often is this data updated?
WorldIP.io updates its IP allocation data weekly from MaxMind GeoLite2 databases, which are published every Tuesday. DNS records are scanned continuously. Statistics on this page reflect the most recent import.
